The AI Asia Pacific Institute had the honor of participating in the Digital X ADB 2024 event held by the Asian Development Bank in Manila from September 24-26. Represented by President and Executive Director Kelly Forbes and Vice President Peter Brimble, the Institute contributed to discussions around AI’s transformative role in the Asia-Pacific region.
This year’s event, organized by ADB’s Climate Change and Sustainable Development (CCSD) Department in partnership with the Information Technology Department (ITD) and selected sector groups, focused on AI as a central theme, showcasing various digital initiatives and AI-driven use cases to promote resilient, inclusive, and sustainable development.
During her session on ‘Empowering AI Infrastructure and Skills Development for the AI-powered Future in ASEAN’, Kelly addressed the importance of bridging the digital divide through actionable strategies, emphasizing the need for robust digital infrastructure and equitable access to technology. She stressed the importance of cross-sectoral and cross-country collaboration, particularly in regions like ASEAN, where geopolitical tensions can hinder progress. Kelly also highlighted the critical role of digital literacy in combating misinformation and empowering communities, driving home the message that improving digital skills is essential for fostering resilience and informed societies.
In his session, titled “Navigating the Ethical Use and Governance of AI,” Peter focused on the opportunities and challenges of AI governance. He discussed the importance of establishing ethical frameworks and accountability mechanisms to ensure the inclusive and equitable deployment of AI across the Asia-Pacific. His session emphasized the need for AI to support sustainable development while carefully addressing the associated risks. He noted ADB’s efforts to integrate AI into key sectors such as education, health, finance, and climate change, while fostering public-private partnerships and cross-border cooperation.
Events like Digital X ADB 2024 provide an excellent platform for thought leadership and collaboration on the transformative potential of AI in the region. For the AI Asia Pacific Institute, these gatherings are a valuable opportunity to share insights, exchange ideas, and strengthen partnerships that drive ethical AI practices and innovation. As we continue to engage in such events, we remain committed to shaping a future where AI is harnessed responsibly to create inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development across the Asia-Pacific and beyond.
