
AI Asia Pacific Institute (AIAPI) Board Chair, Peter Brimble, delivered the keynote address at the inaugural virtual session of the 2025 Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Regional Workshop: AI FutureMakers on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
Organized by Kenan Foundation Asia and supported by the U.S. Department of State, the workshop, titled “AI Horizons: Exploring Core Concepts, Real-World Impact, and the ASEAN Potential,” brought together 60 emerging leaders from ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste. This initiative aims to equip young professionals, entrepreneurs, and changemakers with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to develop responsible and impactful AI-driven solutions. The program fosters regional collaboration, encouraging participants to explore innovative applications of AI that address pressing societal challenges while ensuring ethical and sustainable implementation.
In his keynote address, Peter Brimble shared insights on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of Southeast Asia. He highlighted how AI is already driving progress in financial inclusion, business development, and governance, helping to create more equitable economic opportunities across the region. He also emphasized the importance of human-centric AI, advocating for technology that aligns with ethical principles, respects human values, and prioritizes societal well-being. Addressing both the opportunities and challenges of AI adoption in ASEAN, he underscored the need for strong policy frameworks, investment in AI education, and cross-sector collaboration to maximize AI’s benefits while mitigating potential risks.
The session set the stage for an engaging and thought-provoking workshop, inspiring participants to think critically about the role of AI in their respective fields. Through a series of discussions, case studies, and interactive sessions, the program will empower young leaders to harness AI for positive change, fostering a future where technology serves as a tool for inclusive growth and sustainable development across the region.
