The AI Asia Pacific Institute (AIAPI) proudly contributed to the “Empowering NREN Institutions: Generative AI Training for Network Monitoring and Cybersecurity” workshop hosted by the AIT Artificial Intelligence Technology Center (AIT), with support from the European Union and Asi@Connect.

Representing AIAPI, Executive Director Kelly Forbes delivered a strategic intervention centered on enabling ASEAN institutions to responsibly adopt generative AI (GenAI) across research, education, and operational domains. Her remarks drew from AIAPI’s landmark contributions, including the ASEAN Generative AI Discussion Paper and the Online Safety Discussion Paper.
Kelly’s session outlined five key areas for ASEAN GenAI integration:
- Context Setting: She emphasized AIAPI’s mission to facilitate the responsible adoption of AI across the Asia-Pacific region, aligning with ASEAN’s digital and ethical governance vision.
- AI Integration Across Functions: She highlighted practical applications of tools in academic research, curriculum delivery, administrative processes, and community outreach—tools that offer scalable, cost-effective innovation for diverse institutions.
- Cybersecurity and Online Safety: Citing AIAPI’s Online Safety Discussion Paper, she examined risks such as misinformation, phishing, and data misuse exacerbated by GenAI technologies, urging proactive responses.
- Ethical and Responsible Use: Kelly stressed the importance of robust ethics protocols, AI literacy programs, and institutional governance frameworks to mitigate bias, hallucinations, and misuse.
- Capacity Building and Collaboration: She called for strengthened cross-sector partnerships to enable knowledge exchange, train-the-trainer initiatives, and the development of ASEAN-relevant policy frameworks that ensure GenAI adoption is regionally grounded and globally informed.

AIAPI’s participation reaffirmed its commitment to building capacity and catalyzing responsible AI deployment tailored to the region’s unique cultural and infrastructural diversity.
