Screens, Systems, and Safeguards: Online Harms, Artificial Intelligence, and the Governance of Children’s Digital Lives in ASEAN examines how AI, social media, and algorithmic systems are reshaping the online experiences and risks faced by children and young people across Southeast Asia.

The report explores emerging harms including cyberbullying, deepfakes, online exploitation, and manipulative recommender systems, while analysing how governments are responding through new regulatory and governance frameworks.

Co-authored by Access Partnership Institute and the AI Asia Pacific Institute, the report provides a comparative analysis of global policy developments alongside ASEAN-specific recommendations for safer, more accountable digital ecosystems. It brings together perspectives from policymakers, researchers, child safety advocates, and industry experts to support evidence-based discussions on the future of child online safety and AI governance in the region.

This report is the fourth in the AI Asia Pacific Institute’s annual series examining the state of Artificial Intelligence in the Asia-Pacific Region. The series explores the landscape and recent developments of AI governance across the Asia-Pacific, this time taking a specific focus on the state of AI in the 16 nations that comprise the Pacific Islands, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

This report is the third in the AI Asia Pacific Institute’s annual series examining the state of “Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence in the Asia-Pacific Region”.9 It explores the landscape and recent developments of AI governance across the Asia-Pacific, this time including additional Southeast Asian countries and attempting a more concise regional overview.

The 2022 Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence in the Asia-Pacific region report is one of the first few studies to undertake a deep dive into some of the region’s countries using specific and discrete indicators on AI policy and strategy. Through an in-depth case study approach, the report analyses the underlying social, political, and economic factors, which shape each country’s unique approach to AI development and acknowledges the geopolitical polarity of the region.

We stand at the dawn of a new era. As we enter a Fourth Industrial Revolution1 characterised by a fusion of technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI)2 is influencing almost all areas of human life. This report aims to lay out a pathway for strengthening trust and acceptance of AI systems, therefore encouraging innovation and empowering stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region to move beyond a role as mere spectators of this technology revolution to active participants.
